FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
PSI UPGRADES SOFTWARE FOR HP95LX, DOS PLATFORMS;
Also Includes Software in Shipments of U.S.
Robotics Modem, Sparcom Smart Dock
April 9, 1993, Reston Va. - Accessing Internet electronic messaging,
bulletin board and file transfer services has just become easier for
HP95LX palmtop and other PC users.
Performance Systems International, Inc. (PSI), the nation's largest
provider of commercial Internet access, has released enhanced
software for its PSILink Global Messaging Access Service. PSILink
brings Internet e-mail, USENET news access and anonymous file
transfer capabilities on a modest, flat-fee dialup basis to individual
users throughout the U.S., and in Europe, the Pacific Rim, Canada and
Mexico.
PSILink also provides two-way messaging over RAM Mobile Data's
wireless network, utilizing Ericsson GE's radio packet modem, the
Mobidem.
The company's version 1.2 of PSILink for the HP95LX software
allows users to import a text file into a message, provides a prompt
for the name of a file when users attempt to export a message and
provides support for server administrative changes such as carbon-
copying and forwarding.
The 3.4 DOS version of PSILink includes an option to reformat a
screen when writing mail or news messages, adds the ability to
append a signature file to outgoing messages, adds "Read Mail
Options" and "Write Mail Options" to the Main Menu and provides a
much faster process for deleting items.
"This is the latest result of our continuing effort to make PSILink as
popular among individual electronic information users as our other
services are among corporate users," said Martin L. Schoffstall, PSI's
vice president and chief technical officer.
Schoffstall said both versions of the enhanced PSILink software are
available for downloading at no charge via the new PSILink Bulletin
Board System. The telephone number to access the bulletin board
from any standard communications software package -- such as
Kermit, ProComm or CrossTalk -- is 703.406.2081. The login is
"psilink" and no password is necessary. PSILink software is also
available via the Internet anonymous file transfer protocol on
"ftp.psi.com" in the "psilink" directory. The DOS software is available
as "psilink.zip," and the HP95LX software is available as "psi95lx.zip".
Agreements with U.S. Robotics, Sparcom
In another effort to broaden sales and marketing channels of the
PSILink service, PSI has signed joint marketing agreements with U.S.
Robotics of Skokie, Il., and Sparcom Corp. of Corvallis, Ore. Under the
agreements, PSI will include its latest software and service
information for the HP95LX platform in shipments of the companies'
products.
U.S. Robotics manufactures a 2400 baud V.42bis cradle modem for
the HP95LX, and Sparcom manufactures a "connectivity system," also
for the HP95LX. Sparcom's SmartDock product links the HP95LX to
any desktop computer, and includes a modem and software
permitting fax transmission of text files.
"We feel providing PSILink software in the same package as these
products will encourage usage and extend the universe of PSILink
users," said Schoffstall.
PSI, headquartered in Reston, Va., is a value-added internetworking
services provider with a wide spectrum of services for the individual
and corporate user of electronic information. Services range from
electronic mail products to turnkey integration of local area networks
into the PSINet wide area network system and the Internet.
